In order to use satellite imagery &/or aerial photos for mapping purposes, the data must be orthorectified.  Orthorectification corrects the imagery based on sensor position and a digital terrain (elevation) model, to produce a precise product suitable for image based mapping.

It is only by orthorectifying images that it becomes possible to register photo images with existing vector mapping.
