Considerable work is required to convert GIS datasets into a form suitable for map production.
Two words sum up all that is required:
| Generalisation |
The reduction of detail and, in certain cases, distortion of the detail (e.g. separation
of a road and railway so that they can be distinguished) to make the map more readable. |
| Representation |
The appearance of line and area features to conform to accepted cartographic
practice. This tends to vary from region to region: for example, American maps have a
different "look & feel" to British maps, which are, in turn, different from Swiss
maps, etc.
This is best summed up as the "house style" of the publisher concerned. |
Geo Strategies works with a variety of publishers to create data sets suitable for printing. As
those involved with this aspect of cartography know only too well, this requires considerable knowledge of
modern printing technology to ensure that pre-press aspects are fully controlled.
