We have build an extensive archive of digital data for telecommunications applications.  This includes vector, clutter and terrain data for over 50 countries

Our terrain models are mainly created from Russian military maps in the first instance;  however, the data capture phase is always preceded by a careful analysis of the maps by geomorphology experts who get inside the minds of the cartographer to ensure that the end product "obeys" the rules of geomorphology.  This sounds a bizarre process, but our customers tell us that our DEM/DTMs are exceptionally good when compared with field observation.  This process is particularly important in flat regions  - e.g. for our DEM of Cambodia.

Vector data is still best captured from paper maps, but updated with satellite imagery to ensure that items such as urban sprawl fully reflect the current status.

Clutter (land use) data is increasingly captured from satellite imagery to provide the detail necessary for correct radio path predictions.
