The Romanian space Agency (ROSA) is the focal point for all space-related activities within
Romania. Within its umbrella, some 40 research and higher education organisations carry out work on the
peaceful applications of space technology.
Dorin Prunariu, President of ROSA, was Romania’s first cosmonaut. He flew on Soyuz 40 in 1981.
It is fitting that he now heads the national space programme.
During 1996 and 1997, Romanian scientists flew experiments on the S4-Interball satellite and also on
the Priroda mission. These included experiments on microgravity and thermal elasticity. Currently, work is
being directed towards the use of small satellite missions for earth observation and communications.
In 1993, ROSA signed a collaborative agreement with ESA (the European Space Agency) and this is likely
to result in Romania becoming part of the PRODEX programme.
Of local interest is the fact that ROSA will be creating a library of remote sensed imagery which is
available for Romania. This will become a valuable asset for environmental research and scientific
studies.
