Geo Strategies has just completed a major update of its digital maps and also creating new products for Romania. This was based on EGNOS-enhanced GPS which was used to survey accurately the geometry of all European and National roads, plus 12 major towns and cities, in addition to updating the street map for Bucharest.

EGNOS (European Geo-Stationary National Overlay Service) is a component which precedes the full deployment of the full EU Galileo satellite system. This transmits correction signals to enable suitably adapted GPS receivers to measure location and elevation to better than 1.5 metre accuracy.

According to Gabi Antinie, the Operations Director of Geo Strategies, “We have now developed a new product which represents the most accurate and comprehensive maps of Romania which are available. Not only have we re-aligned all the major National and European roads, we have also checked the validity of the existing maps and associated information. This has revealed many anomalies including over 100 km of roads which simply don’t exist and, of course, a variety of new constructions. The users of our new digital maps can now plan their routes in complete confidence”.

“Another important aspect is the precision of the road alignment. This is because a number of our customers use the maps for tracking the location of high-value cargoes. We put a “geo-fence” around the intended route so that a satellite can detect if a vehicle has deviated from the intended route by, say, more that 100 metres. Now that we have achieved sub-5 metre precision* on the road network, we can reduce both the width of the geo-fence and also reduce the number of false alarms. Our customers tell us that this will provide valuable operational benefit”.

This recent, major update of the road network is part of Geo Strategies’ policy of continuous map and data update so that the company has available the most comprehensive and up-to-date geographical and digital map data for Romania.
