Memory Lane
| This was our first year: the company was registered on 1 April 1993 and, at that stage, we
had visions of Geo Strategies becoming a small consultancy and GIS software house. Daniela was still
teaching geography at the local school, punctuated by endless train journeys (6 hours each way) to
Bucharest. It was the year of energy, enthusiasm, frustrations, wet shoes and a growing realisation
that the market was not ready for us – at least as a software distributor.
Towards the end of the year, we decided we had to set up a serious GIS demonstration facility, so Daniela visited Laser-Scan in Cambridge for six weeks where she learnt the elements of map production and GIS, plus a seriously worrying week with DEC to learn and understand VMS and cluster administration. Tough meat for a geography teacher who had only just acquired her first PC-286 – our total computational facilities at that stage!
